It may not be raining as much as it should have been, but the fear of dengue looms on the Capital. And the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is leaving nothing to chances for countering the dengue threat.

Over the last several months, the civic agency has issued notices and challans to the concerned officials in different government and private buildings in Delhi that have been found to be breeding grounds of mosquitoes. The list of such buildings on the NDMC radar includes Doordarshan Bhawan, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Lady Hardinge Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, several state bhawans and even temples.

NDMC has already issued approximately 4,132 notices and 216 challans to various office bearers and residents. Last year, by this time of the year, the civic agency had issued 3,012 notices and 195 challans. "Government offices, where construction works are going on, have become breeding grounds for the mosquitoes. Often it is the fault of the contractors who are negligent.

They have been challaned," said RN Singh, chief medical officer of NDMC's public health department. During the inspection it was found that mosquitoes were breeding in the overhead tanks of these buildings and in those precincts, Singh added.

Repeated notices were sent to Baroda House in the last few months. Officials found that mosquitoes were breeding in some of the coolers installed at the Home Ministry in North Block.

The concerned contractor was immediately notified, the officer said. "Construction work is on behind the Supreme Court premises, and the contractor has been challaned for similar reason," informed the officer. Among the big hospitals in NDMC area, AIIMS has been served 44 notices and challaned twice since January, an NDMC officer told Mail Today.

Safdarjung Hospital has been served with five challans and 38 notices, so far. "We found that mosquitoes were breeding in the overhead tanks of Uttarakhand Niwas and Kerala Bhawan, and they have been duly notified," said an NDMC supervising officer.
