LUDHIANA: A city resident, who owns one of the three properties obstructing the proposed passage to the Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar memorial told The Times of India he is ready to donate the land. He took the decision after a story carried by the Ludhiana Times of India in which family members of the martyr demanded proper passage to the memorial, which has a narrow path leading to it as of now.

Sunil Mehra, general secretary of Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal, a social worker and resident of cemetery road, in a letter written to The Times of India, said he is ready to give up his personal interests for the sake of martyrs Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. "I am ready to donate my land for the purpose and I hope others do the same so that a better passage to the memorial is cleared. When I read the story in the Ludhiana Times of India, I could not help myself and therefore I write this letter ," he wrote.
Mehra said he would send a letter to the district administration and the government in this regard. He said the contribution of the martyr, Sukhdev Thapar could not be undermined and providing a direct, easy approachable passage to the memorial of the martyr is a duty of the government,
"However I feel we should also cooperate with the government by offering land. At some point of time, this property of mine was Dewan Chand Mehra free charitable hospital run by our family. I am also ready to offer for any other kind help required to give the memorial the respect it deserves," he said.
Ashok Thapar, the martyr's nephew and president of the Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Memorial Trust said, "We are thankful to The Times of India and Sunil Mehra for taking the step. Once the passage is cleared, the memorial will become approachable to visitors from different parts of the country and the world."
