Police and emergency crews responded to a serious motor vehicle collision in Winnipeg's Weston area Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses said bystanders held one driver, who tried to stab them, for police.

Just after 4 p.m., witnesses said they saw a Ford Escape speeding down Pacific, possibly going as fast as a hundred kilometers an hour.

They said it raced through a stop sign at Cecil and slammed into a Chevy Cavalier, spinning that vehicle around three times.

Both the Ford and Chevy then hit a silver van and ended up in a yard in the 1400 block of Pacific Avenue.

Paramedics transported two people to hospital with serious injuries.

A witness said the driver of the van and another man worked to subdue the driver of Ford, who tried to leave the scene.

The witness said the driver of the Ford had pulled a knife and tried to stab the men, but they managed to wrestle it away from him and held him until officers arrived.

The witness said the man had been screaming that he was "hammered."

Police say the 31-year-old man who was hit had extensive injuries and required surgery, but has stabilized.

The 38-year-old suspect who ran a stop sign was driving a stolen vehicle, said police. He's still in hospital and will be formally processed when released.
