Online crime plagues Gulf countries [ANSA]

(ANSA Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) (ANSAmed) - DUBAI, SEPTEMBER 17 - Oil-producing countries in the Gulf are one of the main targets of online crime, with an average expenditure of 5.4 million dollars for each recovery of stolen information, a study revealed Wednesday at an Internet security conference in Abu Dhabi. The event also highlighted the vulnerability of the entire MENA region - the Middle East and North Africa - where the rate of regional expenditure is double the global average. The region's budget for information security will be well over one billion dollars this year, or eight percent more than 2013. Internet crimes reported last year included a massive cyber attack on the Saudi oil giant Aramco in which a significant amount of data vanished, and one of the largest online bank robberies on record, in which 45 million dollars were stolen from two Gulf banks through credit and debit cards spread across 27 countries. Government administrations, financial service institutions, and oil companies are the three categories that attract the most, and most massive, attacks in the MENA region. (ANSAmed).
