Varanasi: The Special Task Force (STF) on Wednesday arrested Ajit Yadav alias Bunty alias Doctor, an accused in Lucknow’s Maaz murder case, along with his accomplice from Mardah in Ghazipur district. A carbine, four pistols including one of .9mm, live cartridges and a car were recovered from their possession.
According to Varanasi field unit of STF, Ajit was issuing extortion threats to some doctors and businessmen of Gorakhpur and Ghazipur for the past few months.
Taking note, IG STF Sujit Pandey assigned the task to arrest Ajit to this unit. By monitoring the calls made by Ajit, the STF personnel succeeded in tracing him at his native place Mardah and arrested him while he was going somewhere in his car with accomplice Munib Chauhan.
In 2013 Ajit killed Maaz Ahmed, a 14-year-old boy at Faridinagar in Indiranagar in Lucknow on a contract from a police sub-inspector Sanjay Rai in Lucknow. Ajit was arrested in May 2013 by the Mau police. He was taken to Lucknow where during interrogation by the crime branch, he had reportedly accepted that he killed Maaz after getting a contract from SI Sanjay Rai against the payment of Rs 2.50 lakh.
During further investigation, it surfaced that Rai had prepared a plot to kill his estranged girlfriend’s teenaged brother by presuming that the murder would compel his girlfriend to come close to him again. However, instead of targeting the boy, Ajit and his accomplices killed the girl’s cousin Maaz in confusion.
A few months later, when Ajit was being taken to Ballia in a train for court appearance for involvement in some other criminal case on January 13, he managed to escape at Sarnath railway station in Varanasi. The DGP had announced a cash reward of Rs 25,000 on him. The STF said that Ajit had made his base at Gorakhpur from where he was strengthening his network in other east UP districts.
To improve his financial condition he had started giving threat calls to doctors and businessmen when he came on police radar once again.
