Coached by Brad Luka Workies went to Bathurst confident they could make it back to back premierships, even allowing that they had to play Bathurst ‘75 on their home ground.
In a physical and at times ill-tempered match at Proctor Park, two first half goals proved the difference, in particular one to Brendan Hall on the stroke of half time to double his team’s lead after Brad Luka had scored a spectacular opening goal.
It was a personal triumph for Luka who took over the reigns this year as captain coach with the pressure on him to back up last year’s premiership win.
He did a great job moulding the 2014 side, bringing them to their peak at the right time.
It was mixed emotions when the bell sounded for full time for Workies who were jubilant about their back to back wins, but upset about the injury sustained to popular teammate Matt Nunan.
Bathurst ‘75 finished the match with just nine men after two send-offs in the second half, the second of which in particular had dire consequences.
It was a bitter sweet afternoon for star Workies’ player Matt Nunan who suffered a broken jaw midway through the second half.
To make things worse, Nunan will be getting married next week.
Experienced ‘75 campaigner Jarred Portegies was given a straight red card after a disastrous clash with an opponent.
“I spun around at one point and swung my arm and actually collected a Lithgow player who had come in behind me that I didn’t know was there,” Portegies explained.
“It got him right in the jaw and unfortunately broke it.
“I wasn’t able to speak to him after the game as he was at the hospital, and worst of all he has his wedding next week.
“I felt pretty bad obviously.
“I was sent off straight away which was understandable.”
A little while earlier his team-mate Luke Brennan had been shown a second yellow card after a bad tackle, and with a two man disadvantage and a two goal deficit, it was game over at that stage for ‘75.
Earlier, Lithgow had hit the front courtesy of a perfectly executed free kick from Hall in the 30th minute having withstood some initial dominance from their opposition.
It looked as though ‘75 had steadied and they would have been happy enough to go into the half time break trailing by a goal but Hall had other ideas.
On a swift counter-attack, he continued his good recent run of scoring form to drive a big nail into the ‘75 coffin.
It was a great effort for the Workies side to score back to back titles after winning the premiership for the first time in 2013.
Luka was particularly happy with his side’s defence that held Bathurst ‘75 to nil and also their attitude and determination that saw them through the game.
It was a real team effort with every player contributing to the win.
SCOREBOARD: LITHGOW 2 (Brad Luka and Brendan Hall) defeated BATHURST ‘75 0.
