NBC is about to have its first full 52-week win in the A18-49 demo in 10 years. With one week left to count, NBC is running 14 percent ahead of its year-ago ratings in A18-49 (to 2.4); it’s also up 25 percent in total viewers, for the biggest increase by a Big Four net in 25 years. Even excluding Winter Olympics coverage, NBC points out, it would have a 2.2 rating, versus 2.1 for second place Fox. NBC placed second in total viewers, after CBS, for the second time in 10 years.

IN THE NEWS

Dish Network will serve up live and on-demand content from Cooking Channel, HGTV, Food Network, Great American Country and DIY on the over-the-top TV service it plans to launch by year’s end. The Scripps Networks Interactive deal follows Dish agreements with Disney/ESPN and A+E Networks.

The premiere date for USA event series DIG has been pushed from this fall to 2015. Production was delayed when the Gaza conflict necessitated a move from Jerusalem to Croatia and next, Albuquerque.

CNN was ordered by the National Labor Relations Board to rehire 100 workers it replaced in 2003 with an in-house nonunion workforce, and compensate 200 more employees who stayed and worked without a union contract. CNN failed “to bargain with the union about the decision to terminate,” and “made coercive statements,” found the NLRB. “CNN disagrees with the NLRB decision and we are evaluating our options,” responded the net.

The FCC received a record three million-plus comments on net neutrality by the Monday deadline for feedback (the 2004 Super Bowl’s “wardrobe malfunction” drew 1.5 million). The agency has proposed banning broadband providers from blocking or slowing websites, but allowing content companies the option of paying for premium access to consumers.

Last week, CBS pulled an opening segment featuring Rihanna singing “Run This Town” from its Thursday Night Football opener, after a video emerged of former Baltimore Raven Ray Rice knocking out his then-fiancee in an elevator. “Ya’ll are sad for penalizing me for this,” tweeted Rihanna, a victim of domestic violence in 2009, on Tuesday. Later in the day, CBS Sports announced they would be “moving in a different direction with some elements of our Thursday Night Football open,” and in place of the Rihanna song, “using our newly-created Thursday Night Football theme music.”

Ready, set…speech! The People’s Choice Awards kicks off trophy season 2015, airing live from LA on Wednesday, January 7 at 9p on CBS. Said Mark Burnett, producing the show for the sixth year in a row, “This awards show has gone from 62 million votes five years ago to 700 million votes for 2014. These awards are from the fans who actually watch TV shows, buy tickets and download music.”

After decades of growth, the number of women working in primetime television has been flat over the last five years, according to a study from San Diego State University. The report found that women made up 27 percent of creators, exec producers, producers, directors, writers, editors and directors of photography in 2013-14, one percent fewer that the year prior and even with 2009-10; the number of female TV characters fell from 43 percent in 2012-12 to 42 percent. The study included major broadcast and basic cable nets, pay TV and Netflix.

The theme of 2015’s NATPE conference will be “Content without Borders,” announced the org’s president and CEO, Rod Perth. “Past silos between new and old media are disappearing,” said Perth. “One constant remains, which is that fresh ideas and great story telling from every corner of the globe are at the core of how we use new technology by keeping audiences engaged.” Event takes place January 20-22 at Miami’s Fontainebleau Resort.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Hallmark Channel, home of Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove, is developing two movies with author Karen Kingsbury, slated for 2015. “We’ve had extraordinary success working in collaboration with bestselling novelists and we know this partnership will be especially rewarding,” said Michelle Vicary, EVP, programming for Crown Media Family Networks.

Netflix ordered two seasons of a comedy from Judd Apatow (Freaks and Geeks), starring Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper) and Gillian Jacobs (Community). Apatow Productions and Legendary Television are producing a 10-ep season one premiering in 2016, and a 12-ep season two for 2017.

Jon Turtletaub (Last Vegas) will exec produce Letters to My Daughter’s Future Therapist, a comedy with a script commitment from CBS. Project will be written and exec produced by Jordan Roter and produced by CBS TV Studios and Junction Entertainment.

The Big Bang Theory actor Kevin Sussman sold a comedy to CBS, says the Hollywood Reporter. Sussman will co-exec produce Wife of Crime, about a man who marries into a family with mob ties, for CBS Television Studios, with exec producers Neil Moritz and Vivian Cannon (Save Me) for Original Film.

GSN ordered 20 eps of Baggage on the Road, a spinoff of the dating game show Baggage, with host Jerry Springer again along for the ride. Produced by Wilshire Studios, show is set for a 2015 premiere.

Spike TV is developing a drama series, Deep Web, inspired by a TIME Magazine cover story about an Internet underworld crime boss. The net is partnering with Tony Krantz (24) of Flame Ventures, and Flying Studios, the production partnership of actor/producer Gary Oldman (Dracula) and producer Douglas Urbanski (The Contender). Scott Gold (Under the Dome) will exec produce and write.

Jon Avnet, Rodrigo Garcia and Jake Avnet (WIGS) announced the launch of Indigenous Media, to produce original content for digital and emerging platforms and develop new multi-platform content brands, with a focus on scripted and variety formats. Jon Miller, former CEO of Digital Media for News Corp., will serve as non-executive chairman.

“The king of the highwire” will attempt a tightrope trek in the Windy City on Discovery’s Skyscraper Live with Nik Wallenda, airing live in over 220 countries on Sunday, November 2 at 7p. The Peacock Productions event will be hosted by NBC News’s Willie Geist and Natalie Morales and The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore. Wallenda’s walk across the Grand Canyon in June 2013 was Discovery’s highest-rated event ever.

The script for UP original movie My Other Mother was written by Keronda “Kiki” McKnight, the winner of last year’s UP Faith & Family Screenwriting Competition for the American Black Film Festival, and the fifth film produced from winning scripts. Swirl Films movie premieres Sunday, September 21 at 7p.

Bravo announced the sixteen restaurants competing in its new cooking competition, Best New Restaurant, hosted by restaurateur Tom Colicchio and headed for a January debut. The short list (New York and LA): L’Apicio, Morgan’s Barbecue and The Pines in the Big Apple, and Doma Beverly Hills, Little Sparrow, The Church Key and Union Restaurant in the City of Angels. (Special mention for best name: Miami’s Tongue & Cheek.)

ID’s Inside Homicide follows three female detectives investigating murders, from 911 calls to interrogations to bringing closure to victims’ families. Eight-part series from Screaming Flea Productions launches Thursday, October 9 at 10p.

Estrella TV’s Rica, Famosa, Latina debuted Tuesday at 7p, exec produced by former Housewives of Beverly Hills star Joyce Giraud and her husband, Michael Ohoven. The reality series follows the lives of five wealthy Latina businesswomen, but though it’s based on the Housewives concept, these women are successful in their own right. Judy Kenny, EVP of sales and marketing for Estrella, tells Cynopsis RFL “is another example of Estrella TV’s cutting edge approach to programming to US Hispanic audiences.”

T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle spin-off Tiny & Shekinah’s Weave Trip launches Monday, October 13 at 9:30p. VH1 docu-series follows Tiny and her BFF and hairstylist criss-crossing the country to promote their new mobile hair salon business.

Veronica Mars spin-off Play It Again, Dick premieres on digital CW Seed Tuesday, September 16. Veronica’s Rob Thomas created and exec produces the “mostly meta” series.

Daniel Boone (and Fess Parker) join INSP’s fall lineup, as the iconic series hits its 50th anniversary. A six-hour marathon of the western airs Sunday, September 28 starting at 1p, followed by Monday-Thursday 10a airings. 

Live From Lincoln Center launches its 40th season on PBS with the New York Philharmonic’s staging of Sweeney Todd. Welsh opera star Bryn Terfel and Oscar winner Emma Thompson star on Friday, September 26.

RETURNING SERIES

IFC renewed Marc Maron’s comedy series, Maron, for a 13-ep third season, launching in spring 2015. “Usually Marc has a hard time maintaining long-term relationships, but luckily not with us,” said net president Jennifer Caserta. Season one is available on Netflix.

It’s back to the bayou on CMT, with season three of Swamp Pawn launching Saturday, October 11 at 9p, followed by the season two premiere of Swamp Hunters at 10p. A crossover ep airs Saturday, November 8 at 9p.

OWN’s Oprah: Where Are They Now? is back with new eps Sunday, October 5 at 9p. First up: That’s So Raven alum Raven-Symone on her Tweet in support of gay marriage, singer Jackie Evancho detailing her troubling experience with bullies and General Hospital star Maurice Bernard discussing his battle with bipolar disorder.

Kevin Roberts, CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi, becomes Executive Chairman of Saatchi & Saatchi/Fallon and “Head Coach” of Publicis Group, to “inspire and motivate” company leaders; Robert Senior moves in as Saatchi & Saatchi/Fallon CEO. The company also restructured its Management Board.

 Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains) will recur as a guest star on six eps of the seventh and final season of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, as a cutthroat lawyer.

RATINGS

Monday’s season premiere of Dancing with the Stars delivered a 2.4 rating/7 share among A18-49 to top the night, down 23 percent versus its year-ago premiere, but off only two-tenths from its spring airing.

The season premiere of ABC’s The View delivered 3.9 million viewers, the best launch in eight years and the second best ever. Among W25-54, the show drew 911,000 viewers, up 20 percent versus last year.

Showtime’s Ray Donovan delivered a series high 1.8 million viewers at 9p Sunday, up 10 percent versus last week’s high, and best total night ever with 2.4 million viewers, up 9 percent versus last week.

Adult Swim’s Black Jesus on Thursday at ranked number one in its 11p time period among A18-24, A18-34 and A18-49. The net’s programming accounted for 21 of the top 50 telecasts for the second week of September on basic cable among A18-34, and 23 of the top 50 among M18-34.

Last Monday’s episode of Dallas on TNT drew over 2.8 million viewers in Live+3 delivery, up 3 percent versus the prior week.

The week of September 1, LIVE with Kelly and Michael was up over its year-ago premiere week by 8 percent in HH and 7 percent in total viewers, for its most-watched premiere week since 2007 and second-highest in HH in seven years (after the first week of the co-hosts’ partnership in 2012).

Hot Bench, syndicated court show from Judge Judy’s Judy Sheindlin, opened Monday, September with the highest first day ratings of any court show in three years (.8/2 preliminary run average), up 14 percent from year-ago time periods.

The season 16 premiere of Divorce Court earned a 2.0 HH rating, its highest debut in five seasons, to become the second-highest-rated court show, after Judge Judy, for the first time.

The season three finale of History’s Mountain Men on Sunday delivered 3.0 million viewers, making it cable’s number one program for the night. The show averaged 1.1 million A25-54. On a Live+7 basis, the series is averaging 3.6 million total viewers and 1.5 million in the demo.

Sportsman Channel boasts its “Big Game Wednesday” programming helped propel the net to top 10 August rankings in M25-54 and M18-49 among mid-size networks.

FOX International Channels appointed Caleb Weinstein as Executive Vice President of Affiliate Distribution, Europe and Africa. Weinstein will oversee the European and African distribution of channels including Fox, Fox Sports, FoxLife and National Geographic Channel.
