Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 17, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Anheuser-Busch made its statement about recent NFL controversies on Tuesday, expressing concern over the Ray Rice incident and the league’s handling of domestic violence and child abuse issues amongst its players. "We are disappointed and increasingly concerned by the recent incidents that have overshadowed this NFL season,” the company said in a statement to reporters. “We are not yet satisfied with the league’s handling of behaviors that so clearly go against our own company culture and moral code. We have shared our concerns and expectations with the league."

A stunning comeback drove NBC’s Sunday Night Football to a new record, as the game ranked as the most-watched Sunday primetime NFL regular-season matchup ever played on the West Coast. Overall, the contest averaged 22.2 million viewers, down from the opening week’s game, but up 8% from last year’s Week 2 SNF game. The program notched a 12.9/22 national household rating. Top markets included Chicago at a 31.8/49, followed by Sacramento, San Francisco, Las Vegas and San Diego.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Monday Night Football matchup boosted the channel to win the night among all networks with the Eagles/Colts telecast pulling a 9.2 household score and 14,891,000 viewers (P2+), according to Nielsen. In Philadelphia, the game earned a 16.3 rating on ESPN and a 13.7 on WPHL-IND, for a combined 30.0 rating in the market. In Indianapolis, the game delivered a 14.7 rating on ESPN and a 21.2 on WRTV-ABC, for a combined 35.9 rating in the market. On ESPN Deportes, the contest earned a 0.3 Hispanic household rating with 70,000 Hispanic viewers (P2+), marking upticks of 122% percent and 233%, respectively, over the week 2 game a year ago.

After CBS made the move to nix Rihanna’s performance to open its Thursday Night Football slate following the Ray Rice controversies last week, the network is now heading in a new direction with the opening. The segment was supposed to feature Rihanna singing a version of the song "Run This Town" — which she originally recorded with Jay Z and Kanye West — with narration from Don Cheadle. Rihanna later angrily Tweeted that she didn’t want to see it return to the program after it had been pulled and, according to Deadline, Roc Nation revoked the network’s license to use the song, due to “misuse and misrepresentation of Rihanna’s name and participation in connection to the Thursday football package.” So, CBS officially went another way. “Beginning this Thursday, we will be moving in a different direction with some elements of our ‘Thursday Night Football’ open,” the company said in a statement. “We will be using our newly created ‘Thursday Night Football’ theme music to open our game broadcast.”

BTN announced plans to carry a record number of men’s conference basketball games this season with 77 conference matchups on deck, including 10 straight weeks of Super Wednesdays, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, and five Big Ten Tournament games for the first time in BTN history. After non-conference action, conference play tips off with a special New Year’s Eve tripleheader “Super Wednesday,” followed by doubleheaders throughout January and February. The network’s coverage will also include Tuesday and Thursday games, and a slate of doubleheaders on Saturdays and Sundays, and for the first time in BTN history, a Monday night conference-play doubleheader on Jan. 5 featuring Indiana/Michigan State and Nebraska/Iowa.

Meanwhile, Pac-12 Networks made its own plans for the basketball season, offering 146 games across seven networks, before wrapping with eight Pac-12 Tournament contests from Las Vegas. Each program will be featured at least 11 times: Arizona (14), Arizona State (18), Cal (19), Colorado (13), Oregon (15), Oregon State (21), Stanford (11), UCLA (12), USC (15), Utah (15), Washington (15), Washington State (19). Coverage tips off with the Red-Blue exhibition game featuring Arizona on Oct. 18, followed by three exhibition games on Nov. 6.

Former eight-time Pro Bowler NFL linebacker Brian Urlacher is leaving the microphone behind. FOX Sports announced that he has chosen to resign as a football analyst with FOX Sports to spend more time with his family, effective immediately. Urlacher signed on as one of the lead football analysts for FOX Sports 1 in July 2013. This season, he provided analysis and insights on FOX Sports 1’s America’s Pregame and Sunday morning’s FOX NFL Kickoff.

FOX Sports made its selections for this weekend’s FOX Saturday Baseball Game of the Week regionalized coverage at 1p. Games include Tigers/Royals, with announcers Justin Kutcher, Tom Verducci and Ken Rosenthal, as well as Dodgers/Cubs, with Matt Vasgersian, John Smoltz and Jon Paul Morosi on microphone duties.

While we’re on the Dodgers, Time Warner Cable confirmed plans to carry the team’s final six games of the season on broadcast TV. SportsNet LA will be able to carry games on KDOC, including the series with the Giants from Sept. 22-24 and against the Rockies from Sept. 26-28.

World of X Games slated Big Wave Hellmen – a three-episode series spotlighting five surfers seeking the biggest waves in the world – for Sept. 21 with a one-hour preview of the series at 4p on ABC. Later shows will debut on ESPN2 and will also be seen on ESPN and ABC.

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

TBS has turned to Bryan Cranston for its promotion of the MLB postseason. The promo sees Cranston deliver a one-man performance of the entire MLB playoffs via a six-minute video for the channel. The video sees the Breaking Bad actor paying tribute to the likes of Kirk Gibson and Derek Jeter before a live audience.

The Atlanta Braves announced a naming-rights deal for their new stadium, which will be named SunTrust Park. The 41,500-seat stadium is slated to open in 2017.

The Big West Conference is partnering with Learfield Sports via an exclusive five-year agreement that makes Learfield its dedicated sponsorship sales partner. Learfield will establish a local team known as Big West Conference Sports Properties that will be based at the conference headquarters in Irvine. Learfield Sports will now actively sell all Big West Conference assets and tournaments, including the men’s and women’s basketball tournament at the Honda Center in Anaheim next March.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

ESPN.com is getting a facelift in a move to serve as a more mobile-friendly platform, according to Mashable. The report says the site will now move to a tri-column look that will be more mobile friendly with visitors seeing a single column headed by three main topics: favorites, news and now. "Simply put, we set out to build a modern ESPN.com that showcases our expansive content (scores, analysis, highlights videos, and games) beautifully and intuitively across all devices and screen sizes," said ESPN’s Ryan Spoon.

The Yahoo Sports/NBC Sports Network digital alliance ranked No. 2 among all sports digital sites in August, drawing 68.9 million uniques, according to comScore. That is up 12% versus the prior year, with 2.8 billion minutes consumed during the month, also second-best among sports sites.

Meanwhile, the FOX Sports Digital/Sporting News Media tandem, the newly formed joint entity created by FOX Sports Digital and Sporting News Media, ranked no. 1 in digital sports video with 23.3 million unique viewers, according to comScore’s August Video Metrix report. Platforms reached 61.2 million fans during the month. “The combination of our relationship with Sporting News Media, and our own focus on improving FOX Sports digital video content, gives us dominant video scale in the marketplace,” said Pete Vlastelica, Executive Vice President, Digital, FOX Sports.  “FOX Sports Digital  Sporting News Media’s top ranking in the video category reinforces our position as a supplier of high quality, engaging video inventory.”

The American Basketball Association is launching an ABA Channel on PublicVine this month, designed to offer videos from ABA teams.  "We are very pleased to be a part of this exciting new digital platform," stated ABA CEO Ron Tilley.  "Now fans worldwide will get a chance to see some of the highlights of ABA games from teams throughout the league and scouts will have a chance to see some of the extraordinary talent we have."
