Food Review: Saizen's Japanese cuisine manages to tempt you

    Synopsis

Saizen does manage to deliver and the prices won't burn too big a hole in your pocket.

Saizen, which roughly translates to "the best", is the brainchild of sisters Archana and Radhika Aggarwal, who wanted to make Japanese cuisine accessible to patrons at reasonable prices. Their idea: To serve Wasabi-style fare at Kofuku prices.
The 74-seater is divided into two distinct sections: The fine dining area and the lounge area. The dining area is done up in predominantly taupe, beige and gold with pops of aqua. The stonework sushi and cocktail bar and Birdcage Table add a fun touch to the opulent interiors.

We began our meal with a mix of vegetarian and nonvegetarian starters. Sweet & Spicy Edamame (Rs 600), Grilled Asparagus (Rs 485), Prawn Tempura (Rs 680) and Squid Tempura (Rs 480) dominated the first order. The simple steamed and overpriced vegetables failed to match up to the well-made tempura.

Thankfully, the Rock Corn Tempura (Rs 400) and Crispy Brussels Sprouts (Rs 380) made up for the disappointment. The Asian Chicken Salad (Rs 450) with its beautiful flavours and nice crunch is worth trying out. Other hits of the menu included the sushi (Rs 480 onwards), Miso Cod (Rs 1,950) and Beef Bulgogi (Rs 650).

Sadly, one of Saizen's creations Kappa Maki (Rs 550), sushi with cucumber, instead of seaweed, didn't manage to impress us. The desserts left us with mixed feelings. The Mochi ice-cream (Rs 450) offered an interesting texture at first, but became boring after a few bites.

However, the Butterscotch Panna Cotta (Rs 400), though completely un-Japanese, was delicious. Overall, Saizen does manage to deliver and the prices won't burn too big a hole in your pocket.
