Southeast China's Fuzhou city has recently invented a new device to discourage what many have termed the 'Chinese style of crossing roads'. At two intersections in the city, zip-like extendible guardrails were erected to prevent pedestrians from running the red light.
The one-meter high railings are zipped up by a traffic coordinator during the change to a red light at a traffic intersection, preventing pedestrains from crossing. The railings are only opened at the flash of the green light.
These guardrails are now undergoing a trial run and may be utilised citywide should they be proved useful. The notorious "Chinese style of roadcrossing" refers to large groups of people crossing roads, ignoring traffic signals under the misguided notion of safety in numbers.
