French container shipper's deal consolidates East-West alliances

COLOGNE, Germany -- CMA CGM, the world's No. 3 container-shipping company, is teaming up with smaller peers China Shipping Container Lines and United Arab Shipping Co. to share vessels on busy routes linking Europe, Asia and the U.S.

The French company, CSCL and UASC will jointly operate 159 ships for a combined capacity of 1.5 million 20-foot-equivalent units under the Ocean Three partnership, according to a Sept. 9 statement. They will have 93 ports of call in Europe, Asia and the U.S. Overlapping routes will be reviewed to save on fuel and other costs. The companies plan to start sharing vessels as early as the end of the year after obtaining clearance from American regulators.
