Pro, anti-Liberation Day forces put TRS in a fix

Hyderabad: Telangana state government has been facing pressure from both the pro- and anti-forces with regard to celebration of September 17 as a “Liberation Day”. While the Communist parties and the BJP want to celebrate it as Liberation Day, the Telangana Joint Action Committee wants to celebrate it as Merger Day.
All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen, which is a supporter party to the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, has been opposing any sort of celebration on the day and Hyderabad Deccan Democratic Alliance and Telangana Democratic and Secular Alliance are also opposing the demand of Left Parties and the BJP.
Hyderabad MP and MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday said that September 17 has no significance as far as Deccan history is concerned; some vested interest forces have distorted the history to gain political power on the basis of spreading communal hatred among Muslims and Hindus in the name of Police Action.
He was releasing a book “Celebrations on My Coffin” written by M.A. Majeed, a senior Urdu journalist, here at Press Club.
Describing Nizam VII as a true secularist, Mr Owaisi pointed out that the Nizam had extended financial aid to several famous temples, including Tirupati, Bhadrachalam and build Seetharambagh temple in the city.
The Hyderabad MP said that the Nizam had also extended financial aid to the Banaras Hindi University.
Alleging that communal forces are once again trying to make Septem-ber 17 an issue for political gains, the Hyderabad MP said the power which has been gained on the basis of hatred cannot be sustained.
Addressing the gathering at the book release function, Raheem Qureshi, assistant secretary general of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Captain Lingala Panduranga Reddy, one of the participants of the Police Action, and K. Chiranjeevi of Hyderabad Deccan Democratic Alliance said September 17 cannot be termed as Liberation Day, and instead must be dubbed as Betrayal Day or Day of Tragedy.
They said that the Indian Union had clearly declared Hyderabad state as having been merged into the Indian union only on January 26, 1950. They alleged that Communists, RSS, Arya Samaj and others with vested interests distorted the history of the Deccan and the Nizam VII. They said the Nizam VII was the first person to sacrifice his post for Telangana.
Elsewhere, BJP Telangana state president G. Kishan Reddy on Tuesday alleged that the TRS government has been refraining from the celebrations owing to MIM pressure. He announced that they will hoist the flag at Golconda Fort on September 17.
