Pune-based DSK Hyosung, which had launched the 250cc cruiser – the Aquila 250 at the February Auto Expo – has sold 375 units of its 250cc bike portfolio in the July-August period. The portfolio also includes the quarter-litre sports bike GT 250R (along with the Aquila 250), launched in 2012. Both these bikes are powered by the oil-cooled, V-twin, 249cc powertrain.

In a statement, the company has said both bikes have become the bestsellers in its portfolio, which currently comprises six models – Aquila 250, GT250R, GT650N, GT650R, GV650 Acquila Pro and the ST7. All the locally assembled models cater to the mid-segment, which is largely defined in the engine displacement range of 250cc to 800cc.

DSK Hyosung said its Aquila 250 got close to 275 units bookings in the first month of its launch in February.

Shirish Kulkarni, chairman, DSK Hyosung, said, “We have witnessed around 80-90 percent year-on-year growth this year when compared to the same period last year. The 250cc segment has always been the fastest selling segment for DSK Hyosung and this year has been the game-changer with new launches coupled with evolving customer buying patterns and organic growth in metros as well as Tier 2 and Tier 3  cities, and overall positive sentiments in the economy. In the next couple of months, we aim to sell 300 bikes per month.”

While DSK Hyosung expands its dealership network, it is also building a plant near Pune where it plans to begin the local manufacturing of bikes under the DSK Hyosung brand. Plans are on the anvil to add another 250cc offering –the GD250N (powered by liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, 249cc engine) – which is expected to be its most affordable bike. Company officials did not divulge a launch date.
