Swedish furniture giant Ikea has issued a worldwide recall for children's swings from its stores, asking customers to return the items as they pose a risk of serious injury.

In a statement Ikea said: "The suspension fittings can break in use. A child can fall from the swing."

The GUNGGUNG indoor and outdoor swings have been on sale worldwide since April.

Ikea urged customers to "immediately remove" the swings from children and return them to any of its stores for a full refund.

Proof of purchase is not required for a full refund. For more information contact Ikea on 01-5413302.

The company said there have been four reports of the swings breaking - in Germany, Austria and Canada.

In one incident in Austria an eight-year-old boy broke his leg in a fall.

The swing is made of polyester fabric and hangs from a plastic suspension fitting attached to a steel hook.

"It was tested and met all the applicable safety regulations," Ikea spokeswoman Daniel Rogosic told AFP news agency, adding the company is investigating the cause of the fault.

"Even though it was tested, it doesn't meet the requirements of our customers or us as a company... Safety is the highest priority for all our products."

About 20,000 of the swings have been sold worldwide.
