ow-cost carrier AirAsia Indonesia will connect its hub in Medan, North Sumatra, with the country's major destinations of Yogyakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra, next month in order to meet growing air travel demand in the archipelago.
'The opening of both routes will give more options for our customers in Medan who wish to go for a business trip to Palembang or want to go to Yogyakarta for leisure. We are hoping that the new flight services will help contribute to commercial activities among the three cities,' AirAsia Indonesia CEO Sunu Widyatmoko said on Tuesday.
He said the carrier would begin the Medan-Palembang and Medan-Yogyakarta daily flights on Oct. 21, operating an Airbus A320 aircraft that has a total capacity of 180 passengers.
According to his data, the budget carrier currently operates 78 flights a week from Medan to a number of points in the country and throughout the ASEAN region, such as Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Bangkok.
'From January to August this year, 821,870 passengers flew from Medan, a major 49 percent jump from the same period last year,' he said.(++++)
