Counting of votes is underway in three Lok Sabha and 33 Assembly seats across 10 states where bypolls were held last week. Being the first major electoral exercise since Narendra Modi led the BJP to its most spectacular victory ever in May this year, the elections are being closely watched to test whether the Modi wave still persists.

4.20 pm: Results should serve as an 'eye opener' for BJP, says Vaghela

Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Gujarat Assembly Shankersinh Vaghela welcomed the bypoll result from Gujarat today and termed it as an "eye-opener" for the BJP.

"The bypoll results reflect the mood of voters, who were once misled by BJP's false propaganda. Through this election, voters have given a clear anti-BJP mandate. The results are an eye opener for the BJP. It has also strengthened our party," Vaghela said in a press release issued here today afternoon.

3.15 pm: BJP leader MA Naqvi: Results not as expected; bypolls mostly depend on local issues; state units will have discussions.

1.38 pm: Mulayam Singh's grandson Tej Pratap Yadav wins from Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat by 3 lakh votes.

1.32 pm: Gujarat bypolls tally: BJP wins six assembly seats, Congress gets 3; Vadodara Lok Sabha seat goes to the BJP.

The ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) established an early lead in nine of the 11 assembly seats where bypolls were held.

According to Election Commission (EC) officials, SP candidates were leading in nine state assembly seats while its candidate Tej Pratap Singh, grand nephew of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, was leading by over one lakh votes over his nearest BJP rival Prem Singh Shakya in Mainpuri parliamentary seat.

10.58 am: BJP wins Anand assembly seat in Gujarat.

10.55 am: Congress candidate wins Rajasthan's Naseerabad seat by 386 votes.

10.52 am: BJP wins Rajasthan's Kota and Gujarat's Matar Kheda assembly seats.

10.37 am: BJP's Suresh Patel wins Gujarat's Maninagar seat.

10:40 am: Congress, Trinamool lead in two Bengal assembly seats

West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition Congress were ahead in one seat each as votes were counted for the bypolls to two assembly constituencies.

10:30 am: Congress wins 2 seats in Gujarat Assembly bypolls, leads in one; BJP wins one, leads in 5 and Vadodara Lok Sabha.

10.24 am: CPI-M candidate wins Assembly bypoll in Tripura.

10:12 am: Congress candidate Babu Vaja wins Gujarat's Mangrol seat.

09:54 am: Telangana Rashtra Samithi leads in Medak Lok Sabha constituency

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) was leading in Medak Lok Sabha, where counting of votes polled in Saturday's bypolls was taken up Tuesday morning.

TRS candidate K. Prabhakar Reddy established a lead of over 19,000 votes in the first round over Congress party's V. Sunitha Lakshma Reddy. BJP-TDP combine's Jagga Reddy was trailing at third position.

09:30 am: BJP leads in three of Rajasthan's four assembly seats

Early trends show BJP leading in three of the four assembly seats where bypolls were held in Rajasthan.

BJP was leading in Weir, Nasirabad and Kota South constituency while the Congress candidate was leading in Surajgarh assembly constituency.

09:15 am: BJP's Krishna Patel leads by 125 votes in Varanasi.

08:40 am: Samajwadi Party leads in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh.

08:30 am: BJP leading in Modi's Maninagar seat.

8.26 am: In Uttar Pradesh, early trends in the 11 Assembly segments show the ruling Samajwadi Party leading in at least seven seats while the BJP leads in four. For a party that swept the Lok Sabha polls three months ago winning an unprecedented 71 of the 80 seats, it could be bad news given the kind of communal polarisation it had allegedly engineered to gain votes.

8.24 am: In Gujarat, early trends show the BJP losing ground to the Congress in at least three of the nine seats that voted on Saturday. The BJP had held all those nine seats, with their MLAs going on to win the Lok Sabha polls in May.

8.23 am: In West Bengal, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress continues to have an edge over a resurgent BJP by leading in one of the two seats that voted on Saturday. Congress is currently leading in the other.

8.22 am: Trends in the three Lok Sabha seats were consistent with the parties that won earlier continuing to lead in them. The resignations of Prime Minister Modi from Vadodara in Gujarat, Mulayam Singh Yadav from Mainpuri in UP and K Chandrasekhara Rao from Medak in Telangana necessitated the Lok Sabha bypolls in the three seats.

The BJP's Ranjan Bhatt is leading by over a lakh votes in Vadodara where the Gujarat BJP has cancelled its victory procession in view of the massive floods in Jammu and Kashmir.

The other states where bypolls were held on Saturday are Rajasthan (4), Assam (3) and one each in Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Sikkim.
