14 Manatee, Sarasota Goodwill stores impacted by breach [The Bradenton Herald]

(Bradenton Herald (FL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 16--MANATEE -- Fourteen Manatee and Sarasota stores were impacted by a recent nationwide Goodwill Industries data security breach, but, to date, no local customers have come forward to report a compromised credit or debit card to Goodwill.

"We have received zero calls from customers," Manasota Goodwill spokeswoman Veronica Miller said Monday. The data security break was first announced by Goodwill Industries in July and was just updated.

The update explains that a forensic expert hired by Goodwill conducted an extensive investigation that confirmed the breach was caused when a third-party vendor's systems were attacked by malware, enabling criminals to access some payment card data of a number of the vendor's customers, including Goodwill.

Each of the Goodwill stores impacted took immediate action to ensure that the malware found on the third-party vendor's systems no longer presents a threat to Goodwill shoppers, the update added.

There have not been reports coming in of local cardholders having fraudulent charges from shopping at Goodwill stores, Dave Bristow, a Manatee County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said Monday.

"I think if there had been a slew of these, we would have heard and we haven't," Bristow said. "Our advice to local shoppers who used their credit or debit cards is to monitor them closely. In fact, during these times it is always important to check your statements and pay a close attention to what is happening with your cards." Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International, stated in the update: "We continue to take this matter very seriously. We took immediate steps to address this issue and we are providing extensive support to the affected Goodwill members in their efforts to prevent this type of incident from occurring in the future.

"We realize a data security compromise is an issue that every retailer and consumer needs to be aware of today," Gibbons added. "We are working diligently to prevent this type of unfortunate situation from happening again. Goodwill's mission is to provide job training for people with disabilities and disadvantages. We provide this service to millions of people each year. They, our shoppers and our donors, are our first priority."
