TOP 20 WORKS OF ART [Motor]

(Motor Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) By The Editors of Motor Each year the call goes out to the world's automotive tool designers, manufacturers and suppliers. The message is simple: Send us your latest and greatest-tools that are truly new and innovative. Show us something that makes us say: "Wow! We've never seen anything like this before." Besides genre-defining originality, there's only one other criterion that must be met for consideration: The product must have been introduced between May 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014.

Motor's annual Top 20 Tools competition is now in its 23rd year. As in years past, we were impressed by the quality and ingenuity of the entries we received. We offer our sincere thanks to all companies that submitted candidates for consideration, and a special congratulations to each of this year's winners. Without further ado, we proudly present these automotive masterpieces for 2014.

MongoosePro VW by Drew Technologies The industry's changeover to the SAE J2534 protocol for both diagnostics and reprogramming continues to advance, soon to near-universal acceptance. And the low-cost Mongoose line now offers the MongoosePro VW, which enables an aftermarket technician to use ODIS, VWs Windows PC diagnostic system for late-model vehicles (since 2004), and which is available for online subscription. The diagnostics are for powertrain, chassis and body systems, and cover all Audi models, including the premium A6 and A8.

This newest Mongoose, with ODIS application software and an online subscription, permits the technician to run bidirectional controls, view five streaming data, go through OE diagnostic routines and, of course, read all OE trouble codes. The single-line application of each model in the Mongoose lineup enables a shop that services a specific range of cars to be able to use J2534-supported OE diagnostics and reprogramming at a lower investment. And the shop can service more than one vehicle at a time, (www.drewtech.com/circle #101) No. 2021PFX Two-Piece 3/8-Inch Drive Impact Swivel Extension Set by Snap-on Tools The Two-Piece 3/8-Inch Drive Impact Swivel Extension Set (No. 202IPFX) gives professional technicians access to fasteners that are difficult to reach straight on, such as transmission bolts, driveline bolts, exhaust manifold bolts and cylinder heads. A key feature is the laserwelded pivot pin, which allows smooth, hill 30° swivel action for efficient power transfer The set of two extensions allows for many different combinations of sockets and sizes, including any shallow, semideep, deep, six-point, 12-point, metric or SAE impact sockets. There's no need to buy a set of fixed-size extension sockets, nor is it necessary to attach an impact socket to an impact swivel to an impact extension, (www.snapon.com) GOLO by LAUNCH Tech USA The automotive aftermarket has to compete with the on-board OE telematics systems that permit remote diagnostics and provide "vehicle health reports." There are many systems under development, and one of the first to come to market is GOLO, which features a real-time remote diagnostic device that connects to the OBD II connector on the customer's car. The device, which includes both generic and OEenhanced OBD, transmits data via Bluetooth to the driver's Android or Apple smartphone, and the information goes over the cell network to a newly introduced Launch Android scan tool.

How will GOLO be marketed? There are several possible applications. One is when a Check Engine light comes on. GOLO alerts the shop via the motorist's smartphone, providing a vehicle health report with live data. If appropriate, the system enables the shop to remotely tum off the Check Engine light and clear codes. Or, with a continuous connection, the shop can alert customers to needed preventive maintenance and TSBindicated repair or service. The idea is to give the independent shop-from a remote diagnostic/service standpoint-an OnStar-like connection to its customers. (www.launchtechusa.com/circle #102) No. 76564 COP Interceptor by Hickok/Waekon Diagnosing coil-on-plug ignition problems can be done in several ways, including an oscilloscope, of course. But you normally must unplug the C-O-P module and, depending on where it's located, that can add to the difficulty. However, the new No. 76564 analyzer eliminates the need for an oscilloscope, providing a simple method that uses an external contact probe with a bendable arm for good access, and a choice of two signal receiver padsone high-sensitivity, one lowsensitivity.

The tester, which autosets to a wide range of systems, displays in real time the breakdown voltage in kV (voltage needed to ionize the spark plug gap) and the arc/bum duration in milliseconds (time the spark remains ionized across the gap), with the readings translatable into likely causes of specific problems. The display can be digital, on a bar graph or in a real-time graph. The tester also can show misfire events, with a choice of adjusting to trigger on one, two or three consecutive events. The individual displays enable the technician to evaluate the contribution of each cylinder and compare it with the others. The low-sensitivity pad is used to avoid false signals from other coils. The highsensitivity pad is for picking up signals on C-O-P coils with heavy shielding. The tester runs on a 9V battery, (www.hickok-inc.com/circle #103) Bullseye Leak Detector by Automotive Test Solutions Finding small leaks in sealed systems is rarely easy, and the auto service industry equipment manufacturers have developed many devices, including smoke machines for evap systems.

The new Bullseye Leak Detector system provides a new approach, with a visual method of confirming the location of a leak. It consists of charging the system to the appropriate test pressure with carbon dioxide and using a C02 sensing detector. The company has demonstrated the system for evap, tire, air suspension and head gasket leaks, and recommends it for pipes, heat exchangers, etc., provided the leak is large enough (.0002 in. or greater, which excludes a/c systems).

The Bullseye system includes a "smart control" that can operate the vent and purge solenoids for evap testing. The probe-type electronic tester alarms at the location of a leak, and the technician can confirm the identification of leaking C02 by spraying the area with a foam that ehangás color when it c~mes in conthet with COs. The size of the leak can be estimated with the adjustable pressure regulator and gauge as the tank valve is opened th fill the system being tested. An available ldt enables use of a smoke machine with the CO~ system. (www. automotivesolutions. corn/circle #104) TechSOO by Bartec USA The Tech500 features wireless (inductive) charging, updating and data transfer. It works on 97% of todays TPMS-equipped vehicles and tests wireless key fob and passive entry systems like iKey. The tool activates and decodes TPMS sensors, and programs new sensor IDs through the OBD II port. There are no external devices or connectors needed, just the included standard OBD II cable.

The intuitive menu structure and seven-button raised keypad can be used to program popular aftermarket replacement sensors, including EZ-sensor, Sens.it, Huf Intellisens, Orange and Cubelecstyle sensors. All the necessary instructions and diagnostics, including make-model-year and part number information, are clearly displayed on the screen, so there's no need to look up the information in a book or online. An audit file, which includes sensor status and replacement info, can be sent via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, then printed for the customer. A removable memory card allows the tool to be updated without a computer or internet connection, or wirelessly via the internet and a WiFi connection, (www.bartecusa.com/circle #105) No. 688 True RMS Low Current Clamp Meter by Electronic Specialties A low-amperage clamp meter generally means a small clamp opening or a compromise with accuracy. (www. hella-gutmann. com/circle # LO 7) Revolution Fully Automatic Tire Changer by Hunter Engineering The Revolution all-electric leverless tire changer comes very close to being totally automatic, eliminating the need for a trained technician. The operator places the old mounted tire/wheel assembly against the spindle, which hits it into position for demounting. From there on, the electrical/electronic controls do the job. Except for lifting the demounted old tire from the wheel and installing the new tire in its place, the technician stands away from the machine, at an electronic control touchscreen panel, as it goes through its operation, which concludes with mounting.

The mount head is designed to work with conventional and unique wheel designs, including clad and raised-spoke types. The operating sequence is the same for all tire and wheel assemblies, and the parts of the equipment that are in contact with the wheel are plastic to ensure a damagefree procedure. The tire inflation system automatically fills the tire to the pressure entered at the control panel. The Revolution is the first electric changer to be listed to UL201, which specifies the code requirements for electrically powered shop equipment. Pressing the piston without turning it will cause damage to the caliper's internal adjustment mechanism.

Rather than requiring a technician to purchase an assortment of dedicated tools for different vehicles, these Universal Brake Piston Reset Discs automatically adapt to the bore of the brake piston simply by turning the disc. Two adjustable reset discs-one with two pins and the other with three pins-are available. When purchased as a set (No. 468 022), a pair of press spindles (with leftand righthand threads) is also supplied. A plate to support the press spindle during a piston reset completes the set. The discs' universal design allows them to be used on a wide range of vehicles. (www.mueUer-kueps.com/circle #113) FreeLock Door Lock Actuator Removal Tool by AirSept The FreeLock Door Lock Actuator Removal Tool allows technicians to remove and replace the door lock actuator in many Ford trucks, vans, SUVs and passenger cars in a half-hour or less. The actuator that locks or releases the door lock is buried in a door subassembly. Actuator replacement or repair has traditionally required complete disassembly of that door section, and can require a minimum of two hours of labor time for a skilled technician.

The actuator is held in place between two arms of a U-clip. FreeLock fits between the two arms and forces the clip open. With the tool holding the clip open, the defective door lock actuator can be removed and a new one installed in just a few minutes. The tool works even if you can't see behind the subassembly. Strategically placed nubs on its sides help position FreeLock and hold it in place while in use.

FreeLock covers these Ford applications: 1990- 2007 Town Cars 1991- 2003 Explorers and Windstars 1992- 2012 E-Series Vans 1993- 98 Rangers 1994- 98 Mustangs 1995- 2007 Crown Victorias 1997-98 F-Series Pickups 1997-2002 Expeditions 1999-2002 Continentals 2004-05 Freestars (www.airsept.com/circle #114) 6.0L High Pressure Oil System IPR Air Test Tool by M&J Products (dist. by Accurate Technical Services) One of the most common causes of hard starting or no hot starting on Ford 6.0L Powerstroke diesels is leakage within the highpressure oil system that supplies the force to operate the hydraulic-electric unit injectors for the fuel system. Finding leaks by using this new tool to pressurize the oil system with shop air overcomes the issue of trying to close the injector pressure regulator (IPR) valve, such as with a scan tool.

The IPR valve is not designed to close completely; as a result, the incompletely closed valve allows enough leakage to make it difficult to find the leakage points that are affecting starting. This tool replaces the IPR valve for the test, so the system can be sealed, and any leaks you find will be ones that have to be corrected. The tool, which also works with the new Powerstroke standpipes with internal check valves, is available by itself or in a complete assembly with a heavyduty hose and shutoff valve. So when the system is pressurized, closing the shutoff valve traps air pressure for easier diagnostics. The test procedure takes about 20 minutes. The turbo remains in place during the test, (www.accuratediesel.com/circle #115) No. WV711 Smart Pressure Diagnostic Smoke Machine by Vacutec Smoke machines have become essential tools for evap leaks but, as we've seen, they're also being redesigned, and used with adapters, for a variety of other automotive leak detection functions. As turbocharged engines become more common because of their potential for a combination of increased performance and better fuel economy, the need to identify high-pressure leakage in them has arisen, and smoke machines are a logical choice. However, at high pressures the smoke tends to thin out and leaks become more difficult to find.

The No. WV711 Smart Pressure Diagnostic Smoke Machine takes a twopronged approach: First, it incorporates a digital microprocessor that automatically maintains the densest smoke possible at any selected pressure up to 43.5 psi, which increases the visibility of the smoke stream. Second, it incorporates an ultraviolet dye that deposits a trace at the location of the leak. The machine runs with shop air or any inert gas, such as nitrogen. It also calculates leak rates from its measurement of flow rate during pressure decay testing, (www.vacutec.com/circle #116) No. 12200 VW/Audi Diesel Injector Puller by SP Tools/Schley Products This puller tool (No. 12200) is designed to easily remove diesel injectors from 1996 to current Volkswagen and Audi vehicles. The TDI injector's long nozzle tip reaches into the combustion chamber, where it's subject to carbon buildup and corrosion that can make it very difficult to remove.

This kit includes three different adaptors-a straight 14x1.5 threaded adaptor for injectors with linear fittings, a 90° hooked adaptor for PD injectors and an angled 14x1.5 threaded adaptor for the newest injectors with fuel lines angled to the side. Using the included 1-lb. slide hammer allows these injectors to be easily removed without damage. (www.sptool.com/cixcle #117) No. 7470 Nine Piece Oil Filling System by CTA Manufacturing Remember when you just opened an oil container with a puncture spout and emptied it into the engine's oil fill opening? Later, as accessibility was reduced, a funnel became essential. Today, with the oil fills often in very difficult locations and the openings blocked by baffles, what was once a simple finish to an oil change now is anything but simple.

This new oil filling system comes with one two-liter funnel, with a swivel-angle extension designed to reach the fill on even the toughest vehicles. A set of seven color-coded oil fill opening adapters fit both the funnel and the extension. All of the adapters are threaded or have a bayonet fitting for specific vehicles. For example, the No. 7473 red plastic adapter with bayonet mount fits Audi, BMW and Dodge; the No. 7479 aluminum thread-on fits Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Hyundai, Jaguar/Land Rover, Saab and some Mazda models; the No. 7476 orange plastic fits the remaining Mazda models. The funnel system makes it easy to empty all of the oil from the container into the engine with no spillage. (www.ctatools.com/circle #118) Easy INTAKE by Redline Detection Finding leaks in a vehicle's intake system with a smoke machine is a straightforward procedure-if you can seal the system for the test. However, the typical intake duct may be rectangular, oblong, round or oval, and it's all too common that the tapered blockoffs you have available don't fit the shape of the duct for the vehicle in the service bay.

The Easy INTAKE'S inflatable bladder design, with a bypass tube built in, is pretty close to one-size-fits-all. Put the bladder into the end of the disconnected duct and squeeze the bulb pump to inflate until it forms a tight fit in the duct. Attach your smoke machine connector to the bladders bypass tube and smoke will flow through the bladder into the intake system.
