Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) may submit the detailed project report (DPR) for its proposed foray into thermal power generation, for consideration of the board on September 17.
The proposed 1600 MW (2x800 MW) pit-head power plant, will be promoted by a special purpose vehicle, Mahanadi Basin Power (MBPL), at an estimated cost of ₹10,000 crore.
According to AK Sahay, Chairman and Managing Director, MCL, the detailed project report will then be sent to Coal India Ltd for clearance. (MCL is a wholly owned subsidiary of CIL.)
“We will apply for clearances from the environmental Ministry once the boards of MCL and CIL pass the DPR,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a mining seminar organised by the Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India organised here.
MCL has already acquired the required 800 acres and obtained the water corridor required for the power plant.
“It will take us three years to complete the project after getting environment clearances,” he said.
Of the 1600-MW of power produced, approximately 1,000 MW would be used by CIL, while a call is yet to be taken on the remaining 600 MW.
