Love/Hate's Aiden Gillen will join Jack Reynor for John Carney's new film Sing Street

The 46-year-old, who hails from Drumcondra, revealed that he will play a father in the upcoming flick, which has already started filming, while The Commitments’ Maria plays his wife and Transformers star Jack portrays one of his sons.

Set in 1980s recession-ridden Dublin, Sing Street tells the story of a fourteen year old named Cosmo who finds life at home difficult.

He decides to form a band with school mates, with whom he writes songs and shoots videos.

When family trouble strikes, he runs away to London with his fifteen year old girlfriend who aspires to be a model.

Aidan revealed he started production on the flick a few weeks ago, which is the third feature from Carney who had massive success with Once (2006) and Begin Again (2013).

“It’s semi auto-biographical from John’s point of view and about a team band in the early 80s and a kid who escapes his family life,” he told the Herald.

The actor, who is also currently working on season five of HBO phenomenon Game of Thrones, turned out yesterday to reunite with his old Love/Hate cast mates.

Aidan, along with Peter Coonan, Laurence Kinlan, Barry Keoghan, Ian Lloyd Anderson and the gangland drama’s creator Stuart Carolan, took part in an all-star charity match for SARI Soccerfest, Europe’s largest intercultural seven–aside competition, in the Phoenix Park.

Over two days 64 teams from across Ireland took to the field at  the Camogie and Garda Grounds to help promote cultural integration and social development in Irish life through sport.

“It’s good seeing them because I haven’t in a while – and I haven’t played football in about 15 years,” Aidan said.

“It’s a great cause and that’s why we’re here.”

The Love/Hate cast lost out to the other team 2-1.

SARI Director and Former Ireland Manager Brian Kerr was also on hand on the day and insisted that Barry Keoghan is almost as good as a professional player.

Meanwhile, writer Stuart Carolan told the Herald that the next season of gangland drama Love/Hate action will pick up only two weeks after the finale of the fourth installment.

“That’s the first time I’ve done that - all the other series’ story lines picked up a year or so after the previous season,” he said.

The IFTA winner said it will also be a continuation “part B” of the last season and will air in October on RTE One.
