ASEM BAGUS, Indonesia – An annual bilateral command post exercise between the Indonesian Armed Forces or Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) and Hawaii Army National Guard, came to an end with a closing ceremony at Dodiklatpur in East Java, Indonesia on Sept. 11, 2014.
The CPX, based on a United Nations peacekeeping scenario, was part of the eighth annual Garuda Shield, an exercise designed to strengthen military-to-military relations with the U.S. and Indonesia.
“The TNI did a magnificent job in hosting the Garuda Shield 14 training event [CPX],” said Brig. Gen. Bruce E. Oliveira, commanding general, Hawaii Army National Guard.
Held from Sept. 1 to 11, the exercise involved more than 120 personnel from the 29th Infantry Brigade, 103rd Troop Command and 117th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment of the Hawaii Army National Guard.
“This exercise helped improve the co-operation between these two countries, specifically in the decision making process between commands,” said Brig. Gen. Tatang Sulaiman, chief of staff, 2nd Kostrad Infantry Division, TNI.
The exercise has helped enhance professional relationships, and improve bilateral readiness, cooperation and interoperability between the Indonesian and U.S. forces.
“By building relationships through our language barrier and different terminology has made it a very successful operation,” said Col. Robert Lesher, commander, 103rd Troop Command, HIARNG.
Oliveira believes the relationship between the U.S. and Indonesian militaries will continue to hold true for years to come.
“I want thank you for your participation. Your contribution in this support operation will translate in future endeavors,” said Oliveira.
