AHMEDABAD: Motorists can heave a sigh of relief! Now, they won't have a harrowing time on Nadiad roads, which are notorious for monster traffic jams.
Thanks to a traffic awareness campaign launched by the district police, all major roads have got rid of encroachments. Around 109 shops and 74 vendors were obstructing traffic on several roads.
Santram Mandir Road, the religious landmark of Nadiad, used to witness traffic snarls everyday.
The road was choked by illegal vendors and unauthorized parking. Despite the presence of traffic police and traffic management staff, people of the city behaved crazily on roads.
Sachin Badshah, superintendent of police, Kheda, told TOI, "Haphazardly parked vehicles, unauthorized vendors and encroachments used to give nightmare to commuters. To enhance experience of commuters, we launched a campaign on traffic awareness in the town. We successfully removed junks from the roads. People won't have traffic blues anymore."
The police also conducted a drive in prominent schools to create awareness among children about traffic rules and also teach their parents through their medium. By regulating rules on town roads, the police have collected Rs 24.11 lakh as fine while the RTO has collected Rs 19.08 lakh from traffic violators in last five months.
In past five months, a large number of people have been fined for driving without helmet, sporting fancy number plates and overloaded vehicles.
