Congress on Monday attacked at the BJP over Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj's controversial statement that madrasas (or Islamic seminaries) in India promote terrorism.

"The Muslim leaders of the BJP, who are also the members of the minority community, must reply if they agree with their colleagues that terrorism is taught in madrasas," Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said.

Tewari's colleague, Sandeep Dikshit, said there is no proof to relate the two. "To relate madrasas to anti-national activities, I don't see the test of evidence. Where's the evidence?" he said.

"On the one hand, PM Modi talks of modernising madrasas and on the other, leaders make such statements to appease the Hindus," Dikshit said.

"Why are there different codes for madrasas and schools? Madrasas should also teach the same things rather than teach terrorism," Maharaj had asked on Sunday, sparking the row.

The Unnao MP had also gone a step further and asked, "Why don't madrasas hoist the Indian flag on national holidays? Why are there different rules for them?"

A few days ago, a video featuring the BJP leader had surfaced wherein he reportedly delivered a hate speech in Etah. He had reportedly labelled the madrasas as a hub of terror and had allegedly said that "love jihad" prospers through such institutions.

Maharaj had termed Muslim-majority areas as more communally sensitive as compared to those places with Hindus being in majority.
