Burnley manager Sean Dyche refused to blame Scott Arfield for failing to convert a late penalty on Saturday afternoon that could have seen the Premiership newcomers earn their first win of the season.
The Clarets were awarded a great chance to snatch all three points from Crystal Palace in the 85th minute when Eagles captain Mile Jedinak conceded a penalty for a foul on Lukas Jutkiewicz in the area.
Arfield stepped up but was denied by Julian Speroni who guessed correctly and pulled off a brilliant one-handed save to ensure Palace took a point in Neil Warnock’s first home game of his second spell in charge.
The hosts had the better of the first half, going close through Scott Dann’s header that came back off the crossbar and a Wilfried Zaha effort that was deflected and cleared off the line by captain Jason Shackell.
Opportunities were few and far between in the second half, but with better quality in the final third the visitors could have left south London with more than a point.
Dyche leapt to Arfield’s defence after the game.
“He’s a terrific lad, the lads admire him for his work ethic and his quality and so do our fans, I just think it’s one of them things, I really do,” he said.
“If you’re brave enough to take it then you have to be brave enough to take the outcome.”
The stalemate saw both sides move up two places in the table, with Palace climbing out of the relegation zone on goal difference.
