BANGALORE: Veteran Leander Paes termed the Indian team's effort against Serbia in the doubles rubber the best comeback he had been involved in in his Davis Cup career. The 41-year-old, partnering hometown hero Rohan Bopanna, came back from a two-set deficit and a break down in the third set to win.
"If I consider the last 25 years of my career, at least in doubles, this is the most amazing comeback I have been involved in," an emotional Paes told reporters at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association.
"To be down against a guy like Zimo who is in the top five in doubles in the world is great," Paes added.
Paes said that India's singles players Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri now had to take their chances against the visitors' Dusan Lajovic and Filip Krajinovic respectively. "It's not impossible. We have done it before against Brazil. Are the Serbs' singles players as good as the Brazilian guys we beat in 2010? It's a toss-up I feel," he said. "But Somdev will have to play the match of his life tomorrow and then it's on to Yuki," he said.
Meanwhile, Serbia's Nenad Zimonjic said that the injury he suf fered midway through the third set had left him frustrated and disappointed. "I felt some spasms in my neck and it made it tough to turn my head or look up. I tried to play through the pain as best as I could but I was greatly restricted," said the 38-year-old who strongly denied that he had been carrying an injury.
"I don't remember every giving up midway through through a tie so that was out of the question," said Zimonjic. "This injury did affect my game and it was disappointing and frustrating," he said.
