Kerala RSS leader murder: CPM finds itself in a spot of bother

Who sheltered and treated Vikraman?
KOZHIKODE: The surrender of Vikraman, the confidant of CPM Kannur district secretary P. Jayarajan, has put the party in a fix in Kannur which earlier had denied any role in the murder of RSS leader Manoj. It would directly affect Mr P. Jayarajan as many of the lower-rung party committees and district-level leaders were kept in the dark over the murder.
Political circles say that the party lost the game at the murder scene itself. Though the crime was meticulously planned, the presence of a co-passenger Pramod in the vehicle was the first unforeseen element that affected the planning. Pramod, who knows Vikraman, made things easy for police. Though Pramod was hacked down, he survived the attack. The statement of a woman from a nearby house, who also identified Vikraman, resulted in the early detection of the accused and shadows of doubt leading to Mr Jayarajan.
The fact that the party sheltered Vikraman for ten days itself proved the role of the party and Mr Jayarajan in the murder. Vikraman was injured during the attack. So who treated Vikraman is a question even the SIT is yet to find out. After the surrender, Vikraman was examined at the taluk hospital, Thalassery, which is a ‘party hospital’ with a sizeable party staff who will not give a report against party interests due to fear, say sources in the police.
Experts point out that the investigation has been already toppled. That is why the police failed to arrest Vikraman though there were reports that he would surrender in the court in Kannur. Mr P. Viswan, the known counsel of CPM, who practises at Thalassery court, was present in the Kannur court early on that day. With only one entrance, there were none to check Vikraman’s entry into the court hall. Without the knowledge of the police such an easy surrender will not take place, it is pointed out.
“I fear Kannur is inching back to the old days of bloodbath and revenge,” says writer K.C. Umesh Babu. “Apart from Vikraman, all others would be from the party list and they would be safe which may trigger another bout of bloodbath and avenge killing,” he pointed out.
However, Mr Jayarajan is unfazed. Mr Jayarajan, who claimed innocence during the all-party peace meet soon after the murder, has been keeping a cryptic silence since the surrender of Vikraman. “Let them investigate and prove,” Mr Jayarajan told DC. “Who cares for allegations? There were many news reports and allegations after the murder of T.P. Chandrasekharan. Nothing new in it,” he said.
