Melinda Houston's TV picks for Saturday September 20

6.30pm, Ten

Despite winning an academy award and being an all-round terrific piece of cinema, Ten seems a little unsure about this Gore Verbinski animation. It's been in and out of the schedule more times than this season's Bachelor has been stealing kisses. It's certainly a slightly more demanding watch than the Ice Age franchise, but only in a good way. The scary moments are really quite scary (if you're under 10) and the satire super-sharp, but there's loads of beautifully staged slapstick, too, while the cast – including Johnny Depp, Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty, Bill Nighy and Ray Winstone – is superb.

Fisher king: Apocalypse Now Redux is an extended version of the classic.

MOVIE: APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX

3.5 stars

8.30pm, SBS One

The very idea of an "extended version" of Apocalypse Now might make you want a Bex and a lie down, but this is a helluva way to kick off SBS' season of war movies. However evident its flaws may now be (and they tend to be more evident in this extended remix) this is still an extraordinary and decade-defining piece of cinema. It's also well worth hanging around (or setting the recorder) for Hearts of Darkness (SBS One, 12.05am), the excellent 1991 documentary that goes behind the scenes of the making of the film.

BRAZIL'S NEXT TOP MODEL

3 stars

5.40pm, SBS2

Brought to air to help celebrate the World Cup this slyly addictive take on the Tyra Banks franchise has stayed in the schedule, with season one now underway. Along with hot Brazilian chicks in bikinis (if that's your thing) it's also always fascinating to see how a nation's culture is reflected in these international formats. The bitching and the tears seem universal but in Brazil, it's not unheard of for girls to evict themselves from the comp when the pressure gets too much. There's a really interesting racial mix. And the slightly off-key subtitles are frequently hilarious.
