Gerrans posts 100th win for cycling team

Australian cycling star Simon Gerrans achieved another milestone for the Orica-GreenEDGE team and added to his legend by winning the GP Quebec.

The Victorian outsprinted Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Shimano) and Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin-Sharp) for the Australian team's 100th win.

Gerrans also scored their first win two years ago when he took out the Australian road championships and has been their standout rider.

As GreenEDGE team leader, Gerrans has won a Tour de France stage and worn its yellow jersey and won two Tours Down Under.

He has also won the Milan-Sanremo and Liege-Bastogne-Liege one-day classics, confirming his status as one of Australian cycling's all-time greats.

The 34-year-old became the first rider to win the GP Quebec twice despite a mechanical problem with 20km left.

"I actually thought my day was over," Gerrans said in a team statement.

"I had to go back and change my bike, but fortunately our team car was right up there in the convoy so I didn't lose a lot of ground.

"The bunch slowed ever so slightly when I was trying to come back, which gave me the chance to come back pretty quickly.

"Then I had some great support from the guys in the group to put me back in contention to go for the win."

Gerrans also won the race two years ago.

The win marks a timely return to form for Gerrans, who had to withdraw from this year's Tour de France two months ago because of injuries he suffered in a crash also involving British star Mark Cavendish.

Gerrans will now prepare for the world road titles, which start later this month in Ponferrada, Spain.

Compatriot Richie Porte told SBS he will not race at the worlds as he recovers from the ill health that has dogged him at times through this season.
