BHOPAL: In a display of strength, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) blocked BRTS corridor for close to half an hour on Friday and held a rally in support of their demands, including doing away with semester system, online admission system and resuming student council elections in Barkatullah University.
Around 500 students from eight districts, including Bhopal, Sehore, Vidisha, Hoshangabad, Harda and Betul, and owing allegiance to ABVP, participated in the rally.
The rally, which began from Gyan Vigyan Bhawan, caused commuters heading towards Misrod a great deal of inconvenience because of road blockade.
After 30 minutes, rally entered the campus. Once into administrative building, ABVP started raising slogans against vice-chancellor MD Tiwari. "We want BU authorities to stop semester system as students do not want this," district ABVP general secretary Vijay Athwal said.
When BU authorities reminded Athwal it is a policy matter and decision can be taken by higher education department, he said, "We want VC to put pressure on education department authorities." Similarly, ABVP was forcing BU to address their demands on ending online admission and resuming students elections.
Later, BJP student outfit forced vice-chancellor Tiwari to address their demands. In his address to ABVP, VC said, "It is a good suggestion from them, but it is not possible for BU to decide on these issues. I have gone through other demands like streamlining academic calendar, declaration of results in time and others. I will direct officials to ensure that demands were addressed in proper manner."
