There’s been a ‘revolootion’ in the home. The bathroom, once the most neglected room in the house, has now undergone a makeover. What would you like to have? A romantic refuge, an opulent retreat or a fun space? Perhaps you’d like a home spa? We are not joking. In these busy times, when even planning a spa visit seems stressful, a home spa can be the best way to alleviate worries and refresh the body, mind and spirit. And you can have your very own in your bathroom.
How does one recreate the la-di-dah feel of a spa at home?
The basics
Depending on the shape and size, most bathrooms can be classified into three-fixture bathrooms (comprising a wash basin, a toilet and a shower/bath tub), two-fixture bathrooms (only a toilet and wash basin, usually used for visitors), compartmented bathrooms (the shower or the bath tub is fenced off to avoid excessive humidity and wetness), utility bathroom (apart from the standard three fixtures, this has space for a washing machine, drying space, linen cabinet or a dressing area) and large bathrooms (toilet, bidet, bathtub, shower stall, two wash basins etc.). Figure out which type your bathroom is and how much extra space you have in your bathroom.
The essentials
You need a focus when planning your home spa. What is it that you want? A serene ambience? A zen-like place? Or perhaps, you want a high-end whirlpool tub to wash your worries away? Those who have the luxury of space and budget can play around with a variety of equipment - bath tub, shower systems, shower panels, steam cabins, hydro-massage tubs and treadmills.
That said, don’t fear even if you’re short of cash and space. A dimming lamp, a small water feature, soothing music, a yoga mat and a few books can create tranquility.
The details
Spas work with the same plumbing features we have at home – a shower, a vanity, sink, toilet and bathtub. Why are they so much more inviting? The design of the fixtures is key – opt for a minimalistic look. Start with a pretty neutral shade on the walls; a semi-gloss finish is ideal for humid areas. Natural lighting is best. So, open up the windows/skylights.
A lace curtain can make you feel more secure. Consider non-porous and anti-skid tiles for the floors. A coat of varnish will keep wood and stone safe from moisture. Keep hair dryers, curling irons and electric razors away from the water.
The extras
It is truly the accessories and toiletries that will elevate your home spa to another level. Embellish your spa with the best of things – a bamboo mat at the entrance, a pretty jar filled with potpourri, glass decanters for lotions, scented candles and aromatherapy oils.
Stock up on your favourite toiletries along with massage oils, body scrubs, bath oils, loofahs, brushes, facial products, and a pumice stone. Don’t forget organic towels with high thread counts for some serious pampering.
