Pakistani authorities were struggling to protect the historic city of Multan from raging waters on Friday as officials warned rivers would remain flooded for another week.

Troops and rescue workers were evacuating people from Multan, the National Disaster Management Authority said.

The city has an estimated population of 10 million, and is known as a centre of the mystic Sufi branch of Islam, with numerous historical mosques and bazaars.

Flooding triggered by heavy monsoon rains in northern Himalayas on September 3 would continue for another week before starting to subside, authority spokesman Ahmed Kamal said.

Around 2 million people have been displaced in Punjab and the southern province of Sindh, Mr. Kamal said.
