Kerala Governor and Chancellor of Calicut University P. Sathasivam has sought a detailed report from the University Registrar about the delay in the issuance of 50,000-odd degree certificates to students .
The Chancellor’s office issued the memo to the Registrar on Wednesday seeking an explanation for the delay following a meeting between Mr. Sathasivam and Vice Chancellor M. Abdul Salam.
Dr. Salam reportedly told the Governor that more than 50,000 degree certificates could not be issued as the Senate had not been convened because of certain issues on the university campus.
Senate meet
The Senate has not met in the past six months. The Vice Chancellor had put off the Senate meeting a couple of times citing different reasons. The memo from the Chancellor’s office seeking a detailed report about the problems on the campus, which obviously delayed the Senate meeting for more than six months causing great inconvenience to a large number of students, sounded the Governor’s unhappiness over the state of affairs on the campus.
The Vice Chancellor has been at loggerheads with almost every stakeholder on the campus, including the Syndicate members. The face-off took an ugly turn when they came to near blows at the last meeting of the Syndicate held a few weeks ago.
Teachers, employees, students, and Syndicate members had approached the government and the Chancellor seeking removal of Dr. Salam from the VC’s post.
The government, though it took a diplomatic stand by not directly getting involved in the issues, too had indirectly expressed its displeasure with Dr. Salam. The Vice Chancellorhad pointed out that he would relinquish office if he was given a suitable alternative.
