Design college done in by head's high-handedness
BANGALORE: The high-handedness of the chairman proved to be the final straw for Sharada School of Architecture (SSA), which was bedevilled with poor infrastructure. A complaint from students to the Visvesvaraya Technological University resulted in an inquiry and culminated in the university cancelling the college's affiliation.
The institute is just a year old and has 62 students.
The chairman recently confiscated mobile phones from students of Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) and threw them in a bucket of water.
The students alleged that he was acting out of vindictiveness as they had complained to the university about poor infrastructure in the institution.
They lodged a police complaint and approached the VTU again. A group of students said, "When chairman YN Sharma has been harassing us so much, why should we study in such a bad institute?"
A VTU inquiry committee inspected the school on September 5. The university received complaints against SSA authorities thrice during May and June.
According to the committee's report - a copy is available with TOI - the students said bags of all third-semester students were checked for mobiles in the library, while those of first-semester students were not touched. Then, the chairman ordered for a bucket of water to be bought by security personnel and put three mobiles into it.
In its inspection report, VTU noted that the school was running with only visiting faculty members in 2013-14 and with a symbolic director on record. It lacked even basic facilities like drinking water and water for sanitation. The committee didn't find any proper office structure. During the inspection, the school authorities present were not able to produce any documentary evidence regarding payment to staff, bank statements and others documents.
