Day after, cops raid Khirki: 22 Africans to be deported
NEW DELHI: A day after CCTV footage of a group of Nigerians attacking a fellow national in Khirki Extension surfaced, Delhi Police and the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) launched a drive to verify the antecedents of the African nationals living in the area.
Raids and door-to-door verification were conducted throughout Thursday amidst heavy police presence in the area.
This led to chaos as the African nationals protested and some even offered resistance.
They were then taken away in police vehicles. The residents alleged that the drive was an eyewash and that the police officers had let off many people, including a woman who tore off her clothes and threatened the team in J block.
At the end of the day, around 25 Africans were rounded up and their documents checked by FRRO. Twenty-two of them will be deported, said officials. They are mostly without a visa or other documents and will be sent to the detention centre at Lampur and later deported. The centre is located in Delhi government's beggar home complex.
Police are yet to trace the men who attacked the Nigerian seen in the CCTV video with a meat cleaver. They have now contacted the Nigerian embassy to assist them in tracing the accused.
While sources say the brawl was over illegal payoffs and bid to establish supremacy in the area, the cops officially said the bloodletting was over paying up for the community kitchen in the area.
On Tuesday evening, around 6pm, one Johnson (25) had been attacked by a group of Nigerians. A CCTV camera in the area had captured the entire incident. Johnson is seen running, chased by three men. They first try to attack him with stones and later pull out meat cleavers and choppers.

Locals said the victim tried to escape by climbing up a wall but the attackers followed him and managed to injure him. Then they fled, leaving Johnson in a pool of blood. The police arrived after a resident called up the control room. Johnson was rushed to a hospital where doctors said his condition was serious. He had suffered gashes on his hands, neck and thighs. There was no change in his condition on Thursday.
A case of attempt to murder has been registered at Malviya Nagar police station and the cops are waiting for Johnson to recover so that his statement can be recorded.
