In order to free around 30-acre land from encroachments, the UT Estate Office will undertake demolition of Madrasi Colony in Sector 26 on Friday.

Notices had already been issued to the residents for demolition. There are around 3,000 families residing in the colony, most of whom have been allotted houses under the slum rehabilitation scheme. Many of them could be seen collecting their household goods and moving out on Thursday.

Assistant Estate Officer Balbir Singh Dhol said that the Estate Office would go ahead with the demolition. Around 500 police personnel would be on duty to maintain law and order.

The Estate Office has in the past one year removed several slums that had been present in the city for decades. The largest of these was Colony Number 5 in the south. Several adjoining slums were also removed.

The UT Administration has the agenda for making the city slum-free by March next year. Among the major colonies that are still present is Colony Number 4 in Industrial Area, which is spread over 40 acres and houses around 5,000 families. While some of the residents of the colony have been allotted tenements, the others will have to wait for the construction of new tenements.

Festive offer

The administration had conducted a biometric survey in 2006 to identify the residents. Over the years, however, more migrants settled in the colonies. There is now a demand for conducting a fresh survey and allotment of tenements to those who have been left out.

Maintaining there is a need for a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for the slum-dwellers, Sangita Vardhan, chairperson of NGO Vatsal Chaya that has provided help to nine students who reside in the colony, says some support in the form of relief camp, health support and safeguarding of children and elderly should be provided.
