Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R. Sridhar are likely to stay with the Indian team till the conclusion of the ICC ODI 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The Hindu has learnt from a top BCCI source that Joe Dawes and Trevor Penney, India bowling and fielding coaches, who were asked by the Board to go on leave ahead of the ODI series in England, could be given two options — seek compensation as per the exit clause in their contracts or spend the remaining time guiding aspirants at the NCA.
The BCCI is extremely keen to groom a team of Indian coaches to take over from Duncan Fletcher — he is expected to continue as coach till the conclusion of the World Cup.
And Arun, Bangar and Sridhar have impressed the Board following India’s 3-1 triumph in the ODI series in England.
“The inputs from assistant coaches Bangar and Arun were really welcomed by the players. They could also communicate better with the cricketers which is a big factor. And the reports about Sridhar as the fielding coach have also been good,” the source said.
No ‘hands on’ roleIt is learnt that an arrangement to coach and manage the Indian team till the World Cup has already been worked out. Ravi Shastri, the Director of the Indian team for the abbreviated form of the game in England, will not play a “hands on” role until the premier ODI competition.
Shastri’s media commitments will keep him busy but he will don the role of a consultant who could interact with the team management once a week during the home series against the West Indies in India and then in the Test series in Australia.
In the World Cup, however, Shastri is expected to once again assume charge as the Director of the Team. In other words, Shastri’s expertise will be used judiciously.
