‘Teachers play an important role in character-building’

September 11, 2014 01:41 pm | Updated 01:41 pm IST - MANGALORE:

Chairman and Managing Director of KIOCL Malay Chatterjee on Wednesday said teachers play an important role in character-building of students and inculcating values in them.

He was speaking after inaugurating Medha, a workshop on value education for B. Ed. students organised by the Ramakrishna Math here. Dwelling extensively upon value-based education and the role of teachers, and quoting Swami Vivekananda, Mr. Chatterjee said there was an urgent need for change — from ambition to aspirations — among students.

Mr. Chatterjee said the disintegration of the joint family and the absence of Gurukula system had adversely affected the education system in the country. The entire focus had been on making money with disregard to values. Education should have been directed to achieve holistic life than mere living, he said.

Value-based education was the only way to offer right direction to children while campuses played a vital role in bridging the home and society, he said. As children spent most of their time in school, the role of teachers become significant, he said.

Swami Jitakamananda, Adhyaksha of Mangalore Ramakrishna Math, spoke about the role of teachers and education. Having been a teacher of teachers in the Mysore Ramakrishna Math, the swami enlisted various methods of inculcating values among children. Most of the present day problems could be attributed to lack of value-based education, he said.

Swami Muktidananda, Adhyaksha of Mysore Ramakrisha Math was present. Swami Sarvapriyananda, Acharya at Probationers’ Training Centre, Belur Math; Suresh Kulkarni, educationist; and K. Raghothama Rao, Director of Human Networking Academy, Jain Group of Institutions, Bangalore, were the resource persons at the workshop.
