LSP appeals for a liquor-free bypoll

September 11, 2014 12:55 am | Updated 12:55 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The Lok Satta Party has appealed to the TRS, Congress and TDP-BJP alliance to lay the foundation for ending political corruption by desisting from the distribution of liquor and money in the first by-election in the new Telangana State.

Lok Satta Party Telangana State unit president, B. Rammohan Rao, in an open letter on Wednesday, said that the three parties in the fray for the Medak by-election had already exceeded their election expenditure limit of Rs.70 lakh and were spending in crores.

He alleged that arrangements were also being made to distribute liquor and cash to purchase votes. The flow of liquor and cash will stop if the three parties decide to abide by the law, he said.

For the TRS, which promised to end political corruption, this by-election will be a great opportunity to keep its word and win the election without spending money. The Congress and TDP-BJP should also desist from purchasing votes and cooperate for the free and fair conduct of elections. Whichever party wins in the end, it will help in the construction of a new Telangana, Mr. Rammohan Rao said.
