MUMBAI: A twelve-year-old boy was crushed to death by a speeding school bus at Jogeshwari West on Wednesday evening. The deceased, Farhan Khan, was crossing the road when the mishap took place. The bus was ferrying students home from school. The driver, Deepak Gurav, 52, was arrested on charges of negligence.
Farhan lived on the pavement at Relief Road with his parents who are ragpickers.
He was hit by the bus opposite Aashiana Towers. The bus belonged to GM International School which is located at Goregaon’s Motilal Nagar. Gurav, a resident of Kapaswadi in Andheri, was detained from the spot by the cops. He has been sent for a medical examination.
GM International School has been in a contract with the bus operator for a few years. “We do not know many details about the mishap. The bus contractor has been with the school for a few years and we have never had any untoward incident before. The accident is very unfortunate and will take a decision on future course of action once the police investigation is complete,” said a member of the school management. “We are relieved that none of the students in the bus were hurt. For increased safety of the children using the school bus, we are already in process of convening a meeting asking parents to come to bus stops to pick the children,” the member said.
Gurav has been booked under section 304 (A) of IPC. He will be produced before a magistrate court on Thursday.
