PUNE: The residents of Wanowrie and nearby areas will have an additional source of water as the standing committee of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has given a green signal to build more water tanks in this area.
"This area has one big water tank. The water storage capacity will increased significantly thanks to the decision of the standing committee to allow more tanks in this area," said Bapu Karne, chairman of the standing committee, while speaking to reporters.
He said that two more tanks will be built in this area. There was a demand for three new tanks, but due to lack of space only two can be constructed. More tanks will be built in future if the land is made available.
The standing committee in August has gone a step ahead in the project to provide water from Bhama Askhed dam to the city. It has given green signal to built water tanks for this project on Ahmednagar road. A total of seven tanks are to be built to start with. The tanks will be built in different areas on this road. These areas include Kalas, Dhanori, Wadgaon Sheri, Yerawada, Wagholi and Kharadi.
All these water tanks will be used for better planning of the 24x7 water supply plan, which is on cards for PMC. If metered water billing system becomes a reality, all areas of the city can get water all through the day. As per the plan, about 150 litre water will be provided per head, considering a five-member family as a unit. If a family uses 150 litre water per head (750 litre in total), no extra charge will be imposed. For every additional 1,000 litre, Rs 33 will be charged.
