Heavy rains pound Surendranagar

PALANPUR/RAJKOT: Most parts of Surendranagar district were lashed by heavy rains on Monday night. Dhrangadhra received maximum rainfall with 125mm followed by Wadhvan (70mm) Lakhtar and Chuda getting 55mm each.
Traffic on Bhavnagar-Somnath coastal highway was badly affected after a bridge near Kagvadar village in Rajula taluka collapsed due to incessant rains.
The traffic was diverted through Katodi village but massive traffic snarls were witnessed.
The recent spell of rains has brought good inflow of water into 137 dams of Saurashtra, which are important sources of drinking water for various cities and towns. The dams are filled with over 40 per cent waters and 17 are overflowing.
Sources said that fresh inflow of water into Aji (1), Nyari (1) and Bhadar dams will ease drinking water problems of Rajkot city.
Saurashtra has so far received 94 per cent of its average annual rainfall. Moreover, out of the 11 districts in the region, six districts have already got more than 100 per cent of their average annual rainfall. These districts are Surendranagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Botad, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Gir-Somnath district.
