Burst pipeline affects water supply

September 10, 2014 07:49 am | Updated 07:49 am IST - CHENNAI:

Water supply to parts of M.G.R. Nagar was disrupted on Tuesday as a drinking water pipeline was damaged on Anna Main Road junction in the locality.

Traffic was affected severely during morning hours at the busy junction of K.K. Nagar and M.G.R. Nagar, after drinking water flooded the road and drained into the nearby stormwater drain. Residents said such damage to the pipeline occurred at least twice a year, and demanded the entire pipeline be replaced.

V. Gopalakrishnan, a resident of M.G.R. Nagar, said the pipeline carried water from a distribution point in Double Tank to localities such as Satya Nagar and M.G.R. Nagar. “I spotted the pipeline burst around 8.30 a.m. and drinking water flooding a portion of the road. We get water on alternate days. A portion of our street did not get sufficient piped water supply because of the damaged pipeline,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chennai Metrowater said they had started work around noon to repair the main pipeline at the junction.

Sources said the pipeline burst had occurred after supply hours. The work to replace the pipeline would be completed by Tuesday night and there would not be any disruption to water supply, they said, adding that, if necessary, residents would also be provided water through tankers.
