First-time Shiv Sena corporator becomes city’s 4th woman mayor
Defeating Congress candidate Dr Priyatama Sawant by 57 votes, first-time Shiv Sena corporator from Lower Parel, Snehal Ambekar was elected as the 75th mayor of Mumbai on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Alka Kerkar was elected to the post of deputy mayor, defeating Chandan Sharma who failed to get even a single vote. Ambekar is the fourth woman corporator in the history of BMC elections to occupy the post. Ambekar secured 121 votes in the 226-member House, while Sawant secured on 64 votes.

Kerkar, 62, is a former teacher and veteran BJP activist. She was elected unopposed after the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party boycotted the elections to protest the presence of Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray in the house.
