KANPUR: A first year MBBS student of GSVM Medical College was admitted to ICU in LLR Hospital late on Monday night after allegedly suffering from seizures although some reports said he was a victim of ragging.
A resident of Ghazipur, the boy was given psychiatric treatment under the supervision of Dr Dhananjay Chaudhari in LLR Hospital. “He is a patient of ‘paranoid schizophrenia’.
It is a chronic mental illness in which a person loses touch with reality. He is better now and is with his parents,” the doctor said.
Dr R P Sharma, in-charge, students' welfare and deputy chairman of anti-ragging committee, said that the boy was not ragged by senior students, instead he lost his control as he is a patient of depression. “He was admitted to the ICU after he became violent and misbehaved with his mates and faculty members. He was given psychiatric treatment. His parents came at about 12 in the midnight. We handed him over to his parents, who took the boy for third counselling of CPMT in KGMU Lucknow on Tuesday morning,” said Dr Sharma.
The doctor further added that the boy was undergoing treatment for depression for the last two years. “He prepared for CPMT while staying in Kota, where he used to stay aloof from other students. He stopped his medication in mid-May because of poor financial condition of his family. The abrupt discontinuation of the medicine resulted in the violent behaviour on Monday night,” he said.
When asked if ragging is still prevalent in medical college campus, Dr Sharma clarified by saying, “we are taking care that no student is ragged in the college campus. We have constituted an anti-ragging committee and also have a special helpline for freshers who can contact us anytime and lodge their complaints.”
It is worth mentioning that recently a junior doctor in GSVM Medical College mysteriously went missing for three days after reportedly suffering from depression. The question here arises: Why the students of this medical college are under so much pressure that they slip into depression? When queried, Dr Sharma said that while resident doctors are unable to cope up with the long working hours, the freshers find it difficult to adjust in the new environment.
