Lack of institutions “force” 15-20 thousand Arunachal students to move out every year

Absence of medical colleges and other similar institutions “force” students to go out.

Lack of higher education facilities “force” 15 to 20 thousand students of Arunachal Pradesh to move out of the state every year. This revelation has come from none other than state chief minister Nabam Tuki while inaugurating a zonal conference of the All India Federation of University & College Teachers’ Organization (AIFUCTO) in Itanagar on Tuesday.

“Every year 15 to 20 thousand students are forced to move out of the state for higher education for want of educational institutions in the state. Therefore, we are committed to create new and quality educational institutes in the state. At the same time we have to fulfill the minimum requirements of basic infrastructure and manpower in the existing institutions,” an official press release quoting Tuki said.

Expressing concern over difficulties faced by students of Arunachal Pradesh who have to go outside the state to pursue higher and technical education in their respective chosen fields, Tuki said his government had not only set up a number of new institutions in the past couple of years but also invited investors to set up institutions in the state.

Arunachal Pradesh has only 21 colleges, nine of which are private colleges, while the state has only one university and one engineering college. Absence of medical colleges and other similar institutions “force” students to go out, in the process face a lot of problems including ethnic discrimination. One Arunachali student had died in a racial attack in New Delhi earlier this year.

Though the state has 26 polytechnic institutes, three of which are private, these can hardly take in 750 students per year. Arunachal Pradesh has quota for its students in different medical colleges across the country, but 21 such colleges have altogether only 38 seats for the hill state. (ends)
