Fresh doll stock arrives for Kolu

The doll sets on sale range between Rs 25 and Rs 4,000
Coimbatore: The Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan has on sale at least 30 sets of new items for the bommai Kolu that falls in the first week of October. The dolls that have been brought from Kancheepuram, Cuddalore , Puducherry, Madurai and Kolkata, have a tale to narrate, said M.I. Sagayaraj , manager, Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan.
Most of the new entrants this time are dolls, the most exquisite being Brahmotsavam, Girivalam, sets of King Vikramaditya's court, Kalyana varaverpu, Mupperum Devi, the three powerful Goddesses of Hindu mythology, Saraswathi, Parvathi and Lakshmi, and the Sun chariot.
There are doll sets from the Ramayana, like Sita and the deer that lured her into a trap in the forest; Ramar pattabishekam when Lord Ram was crowned King of Ayodhya; Ashoka vanam where Sita was held captive by Ravana, and the Sanjeevi mountain which Lord Hanuman brought to pick the herb to save Lakshman. The other sets include Bharathanatyam, birth of Andal, Manuneedhi Cholan, Uppiliappan, Dasavatharam and Pongal.
Pooja sets include Gomatha pooja, Vellikazhamai viradham, Lakshmi vilakku pooja, Ashta Lakshmi set, Karthigai Pengal and others. Earlier, valayal kaaran (bangle seller), korangaati (man with the monkey), jalakreeda (people in a pool), animals, birds and fruits were the only ones available.
But now there are at least 30 new dolls that come in every year. The dolls on sale range between Rs 25 and Rs 4,000, the manager said.
