BRIEF: Paul Whitten resigns as assistant Horry County administrator of public safety [The Sun News (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) :: ]

(Sun News (Myrtle Beach, SC) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 08--Paul Whitten resigned from his position as assistant county administrator of public safety Monday, according to Lisa Bourcier, public information director for Horry County.

Whitten was assigned in June to head a task force addressing Bikefest during Memorial Day weekend. Mark Lazarus, Horry County Council chairman, announced to the Coastal Alliance that the task force would be headed by Whitten and Randy Webster, Horry County emergency management services director.

Whitten and Webster were supposed to return to county officials with a timeline and a final plan, Lazarus said in an August 2, 2014 article by The Sun News.

He began his employment with Horry County on Sept. 22, 1997, and resigned his position with an ending salary of $134, 143, Bourcier said.

In June, the S.C. General Assembly approved an amendment that allows up to one-third of accommodations tax returned to Horry County -- or municipalities in Horry County -- to be set aside to pay for public safety during events held in May. That means up to $2.3 million the area can be allocated for events like Bikefest.
