Under new rules made by the ACMA, telecommunications service providers will be required to inform customers connecting to the NBN about the impact that a mains power failure could have on their voice service. The rules are aimed at ensuring that NBN fibre customers receive sufficient information about how their voice service will operate in a power failure so they can assess whether they need a back up battery. The new rules commence on 2 October 2014 and are contained in the Telecommunications (Backup Power and Informed Decisions) Service Provider Determination 2014. The rules are issued pursuant to s99(1) of theTelecommunications Act 1997 (Cth) which allows the ACMA to make rules applying to service providers.
