Kannur native arrested in Mumbai for raping minor
THANE: Vasudev Nambiar (61), Shiv Sena district deputy chief and a native of Kannur, was arrested here on Friday on charges of raping a minor, who studied in a school run by him, since January.
The crime had come to light after the 15-year-old girl, a class IX student, delivered a child. She had gone into labour on September 2 in her seventh month and delivered a baby boy.
Doctors had informed Kashimira police about the delivery and the girl named Nambiar, a bachelor, on questioning.
Investigations have revealed that the girl studies in Nambiar's school on Mira Road. He also runs a Shiva temple in Kashimira. The girl came into contact with Nambiar at the school. He had offered to help her family financially and he has been accused of raping the girl on the temple premises.
Police said Nambiar was not cooperating with them for medical tests to verify the charges. He has also been accused of threatening the girl and her family after learning about the pregnancy.
They said Nambiar claimed that he was incapable of fathering a child but was not willing to undergo a potency test. Nambiar has been remanded in police custody till September 11.
While Nambiar is known in political circles to be close to several top Sena leaders, the party seems to have distanced itself from Nambiar.
The girl and her family have been moved to an undisclosed location.
