Kota Kinabalu: Thailand's Sattaya Supupramai won the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Sabah Championship in wire-to-wire fashion after carding a three-under 69 in the rain disrupted final round at the Sabah Golf and Country Club on Saturday. His four-day total of 14-under 274 beat second place winner Niall Turner of Ireland by three shots who also had a three-under 69 in the final round.

With his maiden win on the PGM tour, Sattaya grabbed the top cash prize of RM43,750 while Niall settled for RM28,750.

Another Thai ace Pavit Tangkamolprasert edged Malaysia's Aire Irawa by one shot to finish in fourth place with his score of 281 (69, 69, 72,71).

"This win is very important to me," said Sattaya after lifting the trophy.

"It is my first victory in Malaysia and it comes in the same year after I was second to Danny (Chia) at Glenmarie.

"I was not disappointed to finish runner-up because I learnt a lot from that experience.

Some of it helped here and I am very happy about that too," added the player who now has two Asian Development Tour titles, as this event was also co-sanctioned by the ADT.

His other ADT victory was in the Philippines last year in August and he also has two wins on the Thailand Tour.

He added that his goal is to finish in the top-five of the ADT Order of Merit at the end of season, which would earn him a card and playing rights on the Asian Tour proper.

Turner, who missed the season last term because of hip surgery, said he might have done better Saturday had his putting not let him down over the first 12 holes.

But all the same, he added, he was pleased with the way he struck the ball and acquitted himself overall during the week.

"I missed a lot of playing time and lost my status on the Asian Tour because of that.

But now I'm fully fit again and hopefully I can continue to get better as it's my goal to try and get back onto the main (Asian) Tour."

Meanwhile, home town hero Nicholas Fung who had a miserable first three rounds due to illness finally came good with a fine four-under 68 on the final day but it came too late and he had to settle for tie 20th place with his total score of 290 (75, 74, 73, 68).

The best local finisher was the much improved Lam Yu Shen who had a three -under 69 to end the tournament in tie 11th position with 286 (74, 68, 75, 69). Another top local ace Ben Leong who won the previous leg in the PGM Tour's I&P Championship a fortnight ago shot his third straight even par 72 of the tournament to finish a shot behind Nicholas in a tie 24th while two other Sabahan pros Dino Abdillah (292-72, 78, 73, 69) and Tan Chien Hau (299-75, 70, 76, 78) settled in 29th and 47th position respectively.

The next stop on the PGM Tour's schedule is the RM250,000 MNRB Sarawak Championship at Kelab Golf Sarawak in Kuching, starting Wednesday (Sept 10-13).
